Eibar’s 10-game unbeaten run ends with 2-1 defeat at Real Oviedo

A Real Oviedo penalty in the final few minutes gave the home side the victory.

Joseba Etxeberria’s Eibar side started their visit to Real Oviedo very well, playing with clear ideas and coming dangerously close to their opponents’ goal. Aketxe had a chance in the 17th minute with a left-footed shot from outside the area that was blocked by the home defence, while Luca was on hand at the other end to keep out one of the few chances created by the home side in the opening period.

Eibar truly dominated the first half, producing great interplay and taking control of the game. As a result of their persistence, Eibar scored the opening goal of the day when Jon Bautista pounced in the 42nd minute after a great piece of play from Aketxe and an assist from Stoichkov. That meant Eibar went in 1-0 up at the break.

After the restart, Bautista had a good chance, but the home goalkeeper kept out Eibar’s second and, shortly afterwards, Borja Bastón equalised with a header that flew into Luca’s net.

After the equaliser, the fans at the Estadio Carlos Tartiere witnessed a back-and-forth game with chances for both sides. Real Oviedo took a step forward and looked more dangerous in front of Luca’s goal, as Eibar were less comfortable than they’d been in the first half, finding it difficult to generate danger. Then, five minutes from the end of the game, the referee awarded Real Oviedo a penalty and Colombatto converted from the spot to make it 2-1.

With this defeat, this means Eibar’s good run of 10 games without suffering defeat in league play has come to an end.
